Shilohs at Work! The International Shiloh Shepherd Dog Club has quickly become "THE CLUB" of choice for many longtime Shiloh Shepherd owners. In this organization, breeders and Shiloh enthusiasts are working together to increase Performance and Companion opportunities as well as provide equal representation of the Shiloh Shepherd breed in the working dog community. The Shiloh Shepherd has proven to be very versatile and often enjoys various activities such as Herding, Obedience, Agility & Therapy. Known for their steadfast temperaments - the Shiloh is a frequent recipient of the American Kennel Club's "Canine Good Citizen" and "Temperament Test" awards. Shilohs have also been found very valuable in the roles of Livestock Guardian, Search and Rescue, Detection, Seizure Alert & Service Assistant. Many of these dogs are also Champions of record in the breed ring. The ISSDC is very proud to honor the outstanding temperament, trainability and working skills of our Shiloh Shepherd breed. SHILOHS AT WORK has been created to feature numerous Awards, Certificates and Titles pertaining to these valuable accomplishments. To add your Shiloh's relative statistics to the ISSDC records, please submit your first and last name as owner (and/or name of handler) and the designation for which your dog is accredited with, plus the name of the appropriate organization. One standard "Ch" icon may also be included (if so warranted) as a prefix to your dog's name. Please send your information to WORKING DOGS. What is a title really? "Not just a brag, not just a stepping stone to a higher title, not just an adjunct to competitive scores; a title is a tribute to the dog that bears it, a way to honor the dog, an ultimate memorial. It will remain in the record and in the memory, for about as long as anything in this world can remain. And although the dog himself doesn't know or care that these achievements have been noted, a title says many things in the world of humans, where such things count." "A title says your dog was intelligent, adaptable, and good-natured. It says that your dog loved you enough to do the things to please you, however crazy they may have sometimes seemed. In addition, a title says that you love your dog. That you loved him enough to give him yet another chance when he failed and in the end your faith was justified." "A title proves that your dog inspired you to that special relationship enjoyed by so few; that in a world of disposable creatures, this dog with a title was greatly loved, and loved greatly in return. And when that dear short life is over, the title remains as a memorial of the finest kind, the best you can give to a deserving friend. Volumes of praise in one small set of initials after the name. A title is nothing less than true love and respect, given and received and recorded permanently." --Author Sandra Mowery |

VERSATILITY TRIUMPHS!
"I grew up in Germany and always loved the big German Police Shepherds. I always wanted a long haired GSD but my job involved a lot of travel and so I never fulfilled my wish. I came to the US about ten years ago. It was a coincidence that I met Sampson walking around the lake while I was at a very low point in my life. I had never heard of Shiloh Shepherds before but immediately knew that this was the dog I wanted...and when Sampson's owner told me about an upcoming litter... Sure enough, I started reading every book about dog training I could get a hold of. Also watched DVDs about the behavior of wolves, the training of police shepherds, etc. I did my homework before I picked my little boy up. Originally I wanted Eli as an assistance dog for my almost blind and deaf mother and he was socialized correspondingly. People who had socialized puppies for 'Canine Assistants' told us how they did it. Eli also knows some basics of guide work. I just watched a few seeing eye dogs work and started teaching Eli lots of different words (entrance, exit, ladies room, elevator, steps, car, etc) and he had to find those locations in different buildings. He now works for Therapy Dogs International, Inc. I decided to hook up with the Allegheny SAR team (we also did some training with Tri-County SAR, but soon Eli and I moved to Germany for 5 months and gave up training until we came back). Those are both volunteer groups who certify a dog within their group after several officers evaluate the work. These volunteers are on call 24/7 and accept 911 emergencies. Elijah also got Winners Dog in the Specialty Show in Brookville. It was his (and my) very first show! We should be able to get him his Championship sometime during 2007. Sahrah was a rescue and came to me at one year of age. She is a Shiloh/Chez Shepherd outcross. Within the first four months I had her, she gained 20 lbs and finally looks healthy. She passed her basic and intermediate training, her CGC and TDI. She also won BOB in the Brookville Specialty. Unfortunately, this beautiful bitch was spayed by her previous owner one week before returning her to her breeder. So I have not done any extensive health testing on her. Just from watching her movement, hips and elbows should be at least in the normal area... or even better... too bad she is fixed. For Obedience (and probably soon Schutzhund) we always work with Cathy Peters at Hickory Grove Kennels, PA. She is a certified trainer and has lots of experience with the big guys: Great Danes, Rotts, Dobermans, GSDs, Shiloh Shepherds, Pitbulls, etc. For CGC, TDI, agility and conformation we work with Linda Jacobelli at Okhom Farms Training Center, PA. I am glad that there are still some people out there who put these beautiful and intelligent dogs to work. What a loss to keep them in the back yard or as a couch potato! |
